Four times larger than the Grand Canyon, Mexico’s sprawling Copper Canyon is an untouched land of rugged beauty, where indigenous people live as they have for centuries. Board the scenic Chihuahua-Pacifico Railroad for a 400 mile journey, from sea level to almost 8,000 feet, past thrilling gorges and expansive canyonlands. You’ll get to know the region’s Tarahumara Indian culture as tribal members perform traditional dances and games.

Day 1: Arrive Tucson, Arizona - Tour Begins
Enjoy a welcome dinner where you will meet your fellow travelers.

Day 2: Tucson - San Carlos, Mexico
Learn about the significance of the majestic Mission of San Xavier del Bac, the “white dove of the desert.” Cross the Mexican border for your journey through the Sonora Desert to the Sea of Cortez. On the way you’ll learn about local crafts fashioned from ironwood, a tree found in the Sonora Desert. A carving demonstration shows how the crafts are made. Arrive at your hotel and enjoy the view overlooking the beautiful San Carlos Marina. Unwind after a rich day of sightseeing complete with a short lesson on the local language in San Carlos, where the desert meets the ocean.

Day 3: San Carlos
With a day at leisure, explore San Carlos! Stroll along its beautiful sand beaches or perhaps join an optional nature cruise on the Sea of Cortez to spot dolphins and blue-footed boobies.

Day 4: San Carlos - El Fuerte
Visit a working pearl farm and learn the history of the valuable pearls discovered in the Sea of Cortez. A demonstration on the process of cultured pearl production explains the ongoing efforts to replenish the gulf with these once plentiful species. Step back in time when you visit the beautiful colonial city of El Fuerte. This colorful settlement, founded by the Spaniards in 1564, sits gracefully in the foothills of the Sierra Madre Mountains. Explore the courtyards and gardens of your historic hacienda hotel, hailed as the birthplace of the legendary Zorro. Before dinner, get a taste for the local flavor at a lively folkloric show.

Day 5: El Fuerte - Copper Canyon
Today travel first-class on the Chihuahua-Pacifico Railroad for a journey from sea level to nearly 8,000 feet via tunnels and bridges. The result: awe-inspiring, unspoiled landscapes past thrilling gorges and expansive canyon lands. Discover incredible portions of the 25,000 square miles of canyon. Your hotel for the next two nights rests on the rim of the canyon.

Day 6: Copper Canyon
Experience the Tarahumara culture when tribal members perform for you. See their traditional dance, games and a foot race demonstration. Embark on a tour of Divisadero; visit the small church and the balancing rock at the canyon's edge. Behold spectacular views of the canyon from different vantage points and enjoy leisure time to explore this amazing region. Before dinner, learn about corn’s cultural significance during a tortilla-making demonstration.

Day 7: Copper Canyon - Creel - Chihuahua
A scenic trip through the canyon brings you to Creel, one of the largest towns in the Copper Canyon sitting 7,874 feet above sea level. Browse local shops for souvenirs. Later, visit the Mennonite Museum near Cuahtemoc and enjoy a homemade lunch while learning about the history of this German-speaking culture. Then, continue to Chihuahua, the wealthiest state in Mexico that played a pivotal role in the Mexican Revolution. This afternoon, meet some of Chihuahua’s local children when you visit an orphanage supported by the Collette Foundation. The students give you a glimpse into their daily lives. Your hotel stands mere steps from Chihuahua’s beautiful Cathedral. Tonight, dinner is accompanied by traditional guitar music, creating a warm, cultural ambience.

Day 8: Chihuahua - El Paso, Texas
Embark on a tour of Chihuahua that features the home of famous Mexican Revolutionary leader Pancho Villa and a tour of the state capitol building among the highlights. Cross back into the United States, arriving in El Paso, Texas. Tonight, toast your unforgettable Copper Canyon experience at a farewell dinner.

Day 9: El Paso - Tour Ends
