Day 1 - Arrive in Denver
Welcome to colorful Colorado. Upon arrival, transfer on your own to our hotel. Tonight mix and mingle with your fellow traveling companions at our "Welcome Dinner". (D) Day 2 - Colorado Springs - Pikes Peak Cog Railway Let the grand journey begin as we see the highlights of Colorado Springs. Begin with the U.S. Air Force Academy and its famous Cadet Chapel (when available). Next, imagine towering sandstone rock formations against a backdrop of snow-capped Pikes Peak and brilliant blue skies and you will know that you’re in the Garden of the Gods. Finally, all aboard as we "Ride the Railway to the Clouds!"– Pikes Peak Cog Railway-the world’s highest cog railroad. Look for bighorn sheep, marmots and other wildlife while experiencing this fabulous journey. You’ll feel like you’re on top of the world. (B, D) Day 3 - Royal Gorge Scenic Railway A fun day awaits as we journey to Canon City, home of the Royal Gorge Scenic Railway. A century ago, this was the busiest train route through the Rockies; a ribbon of rail down the 1,000-foot-deep canyon, a granite gorge so narrow that at one point, engineers hung a bridge from the walls to suspend the rails over the rushing waters of the Arkansas River. Today, air horns echo off the hard rock walls as the train passes through the gorge pausing on the Hanging Bridge. You can look down 20 feet and watch rafters battle the rapids and then squint to the sky and see the underbelly of the Royal Gorge Bridge, the world's highest suspension bridge, strung almost a quarter-mile overhead. Tonight enjoy a fabulous dinner together. (B, D) Day 4 - Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad All aboard America’s most spectacular narrow gauge steam railroad as we ride the original Rio Grande Line over the Rockies aboard the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad. A long time has passed since the railroad hauled precious metals over Cumbres Pass. But its steam locomotives still labor up steep grades carrying passengers over high trestles, through tunnels, and along narrow shelves above yawning gorges. Relive the history of the miners and loggers that traveled the same route years ago. You may also think about Harrison Ford as this railroad was featured in several movies including Indiana Jones. Lunch is included in historic Ostier. (L) Day 5 - Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad Train Get ready for one of the top ten most exciting train journeys in the world as we board the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Experience the adventure of traveling by a coal-fired, steam-powered locomotive on the same tracks miners, cowboys and settlers of the old west took over a century ago. The Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad winds through spectacular & breathtaking canyons in the remote wilderness of the two-million acre San Juan National Forest. Tonight, enjoy another wonderful dinner. (B, D) Day 6 - Georgetown Loop Railroad Ever wonder what train travel through the mountains might have been like 100 years ago? The beauty of the rugged Rocky Mountains surround you as an old-time narrow gauge steam locomotive chugs its way up and down the canyon, hauling you past the remains of several gold and silver mines. To connect the mines the railroad’s builders designed a corkscrew route that traveled nearly twice that distance, slowly gaining more than 600 feet in elevation. It included horseshoe curves, grades of up to 4 percent, and four bridges across Clear Creek, including the massive Devil’s Gate High Bridge. Marvel at the scenery and the tremendous engineering feat. After a fun day we’ll continue to Denver, our home for the next two nights. (B, D) Day 7 - Denver After breakfast, enjoy a fun city tour of Denver, the capital of Colorado. The afternoon is free to explore Denver. Tonight join us for our festive farewell dinner. (B, D) Day 8 - Denver & Home The last day of your holiday includes breakfast. Take a moment to reflect on the exciting memories you’ll cherish forever. Then continue sightseeing on your own or join our group transfer to the Denver International Airport. (B) (B)= Breakfast (L)= Lunch (D)= Dinner (R)= Reception
